Southwest Ranches is a town in southwest Broward County, located on the eastern edge of the Everglades about 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. Incorporated in 2000, largely to preserve its semirural lifestyle and avoid annexation, the town takes its name from the many horse ranches in the area.
Equestrian life is central here. The town has developed miles of multiuse trails used for horseback riding, biking and walking, and its developed town park includes schooling and show rings. Neighborhoods such as Sunshine Ranches, Rolling Oaks and Green Meadow offer a quieter, country feel while remaining close to the shopping and dining of Davie, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines and Weston. Real estate consists mainly of single-family estate homes on larger lots, many with room for horses, along with custom-built homes.
